Virginia Summary

October 1-6, 2003

One sailing through the state of Virginia can't help but think about recent military history of United States. Norfolk is a home of the biggest US Navy base on the East Coast and it is quite an experience to sail by these gigantic vessels. Gigantic aircraft carriers, nuclear powered submarines and formidable destroyers towered ominously over our insignificant, 25í sloop equipped with mere 8hp engine. If you donít get any kick out of watching these cities of firepower this part of your trip down south has not much more to offer. Unless, of course, for some odd reason you enjoy sickening air of swamps and strange brew of brownish water. There are two routes to choose from; faster and busier Virginia Cut and more laid back Dismal Swamp Canal. We choose to take the cut when we found out that at the time Dismal Swamp carried only 4 feet of water.
